Do NOT Store Cigars Like This… (Most People Do!)
If you’re new to cigars, you might think storing them is as simple as tossing them in a drawer, leaving them in the box they came in, or even worse — keeping them on a desk until you’re “ready to smoke them.” Trust me, every cigar smoker has done something like this at least once. But it’s also the fastest way to dry out cigars, ruin their flavour, and waste good money.
Today, we’re breaking down the common cigar storage mistakes that almost everyone makes — and how to fix them with a proper setup that keeps your cigars tasting the way the maker intended.
Mistake #1: Leaving Cigars Out in the Open
Cigars are like tiny humidity sponges. Leave them on a table for 24–48 hours and the moisture inside them evaporates quickly. Dry cigars burn hot, taste sharp, and crack easily.
Better solution: Always store cigars in a humidity-controlled environment.
Mistake #2: Storing Cigars Inside the Box (With No Humidity Source)
Yes, cigar boxes are beautiful and smell great — but they are not humidors. A box does nothing to regulate moisture. It’s fine for temporary storage, but not for keeping cigars fresh long-term.
Better solution: Put the cigar box inside a controlled humidor or airtight setup with humidity packs or humidifiers.
Mistake #3: Using a Humidor Without Proper Humidification
A wooden humidor on its own won’t keep your cigars fresh. You need consistent humidity, ideally around 65–72% RH. Without a proper humidification system, cigars will dry out or swing between too wet and too dry.
Better solution:
Use:
-
A polymer crystal humidifier for stable humidity release
-
Spanish cedar shelves or dividers to regulate moisture
This combination is nearly foolproof — and works in any climate.
Mistake #4: Storing Cigars Without Airflow
Cigars need airflow to breathe and maintain balanced humidity. When they’re jammed together, humidity can’t circulate properly, leading to mold or uneven moisture.
Better solution:
Use Spanish cedar airflow racks or trays so your cigars have space to rest and age evenly.
Mistake #5: Keeping Cigars in Warm Places (Car, Garage, Work Desk)
Heat and sunlight can cook the oils out of a cigar and destroy its flavour. Even a few hours in a hot spot can permanently damage a premium stick.
Better solution:
Use a travel case with a small humidity pack whenever you’re on the go.
